Not quite as opulent or over-excessive, but amazing 50s cars are always welcome here.

The Rolls looks beige compared to the Caddy. The 300 was gorgeous as well.

Kinja'd!!!

Plus it was the most powerful American production car in it's day.

The Cadillac cost nearly 4k more than the Rolls lol.

It had multi-position, memory power seats in 1957

You had 44 full leather interior trim packages to choose from with stuff like lambskin carpets.

It was actually bodied by Fleetwood, it wasn't just a name back then.

Back in the day when they weren't trying to benchmark the Germans, they weren't even in the same class.

I know, it's sad.

In a way they did it to themselves; you lose money when you cheapen out and make crap.

Even top of the line Cadillacs from the 60s don't compare to these from the 50s. Quality was noticably down by 68.

If only Jag hadn't killed the 4.5l version of that motor....

The only thing the Germans made that was even in the same league as the Eldorado Brougham were the Adenauer Mercedes, and maybe the BMW 501 - both very fine cars, but I doubt many American or British buyers would have found compelling reasons to cross shop them at the time.

I was more referring to them now, versus back then when they strove to be the best in the world.

Yes, Cadillac hasn't built a "cost is no object" vehicle in many, many decades. That idea did die at GM in the '50s, even though they were obviously still rich enough to afford to do so for some time after that, if they still cared.

The same "let's build the best cars we can and who cares what they cost" thinking behind the Eldo Brougham is exactly what built Mercedes' reputation in the US in the '60s and '70s, if GM held onto it longer, the Germans would have had to fight much harder to get a toehold here.

They only did it because it outperformed the aging XK engine.

I believe all 3 of these cars were in that photo bump I did yesterday. Very nice cars, especially the Broam.

I was born in 1959.....the only 50's car I remember was the ex- State Police car 56 Crown Vic my mom used to have when my dad was still in the Navy. She used to street race it back in the earlie 60's.

My mom is now 74 and she's still a badass.
